In the mid-1980s, childhood sweethearts Wang Xiaoqing and Du Mantang separated due to Wang Xiaoqing’s mother’s disapproval. Zhang Zezong seized the opportunity, but later married the daughter of the deputy director for the sake of his career. When his social climb failed and his house was almost destroyed by a failed price increase scheme, he was left in disgrace. Thirty years later, both Du Mantang and Zhang Zezong worked as managers in the neighborhood. Zhang Zezong tried to make a profit by closing down businesses in the neighborhood, but Du Mantang thwarted his plans. Zhang Zezong’s plan to take over the traditional courtyard under false pretenses was thwarted by the community, resulting in his arrest. His daughter Zhang Ding pleaded for understanding, revealing that his actions were motivated by his desire to stop his wife from moving. Although the neighbors forgave him, Zhang Zezong was given a suspended sentence with probation. He later apologized sincerely, and the neighbors eventually forgave him.
